Underwear in the UK is suggestive of many things – unglamorous grey garments best hidden from view, cross-dressing pop stars and civil servants, Carry-On films and a sea of mass-produced Marks & Spencers’ knickers – but style may not instantly come to mind. This book explores the range of realities that constitute British people’s relationship with underwear, from the essentially practical to the fabulously fantastical.

Inside Out includes specially commissioned photography by Martin Parr and Elaine Constantine, Stephen Bayley on ‘The British Bosom’, new interviews with Mary Quant, Janet Reger and Joseph Corre/Serena Rees of Agent Provocateur, and the late Angela Carter asking “Why are Knickers Naughty?”.
